Dr. Matthias Grund, LL.M.
Dr. Matthias Grund, LL.M., is a partner and the lead practice area leader of K&L Gates’ global Finance practice and a highly regarded authority on corporate and acquisition finance, cross-border transactions, and restructuring. With more than two decades of experience across syndicated lending, project finance, real estate portfolio transactions, and private and distressed debt, Matthias advises sponsors, corporations, and financial institutions on their most complex financing matters in Germany and across international markets.
Matthias has also been a leader of the firm’s global Finance practice since 2014. His reputation is built on guiding clients through multi-jurisdictional financing, public M&A and bid financing, refinancing and restructuring transactions, and capital markets matters, acting for both lenders and borrowers. In addition to his transactional work, Matthias is frequently sought out for regulatory advice on German and EU banking and finance laws, offering clients practical solutions to address compliance and risk in sophisticated transactions. His practice also extends to distressed debt acquisitions, unitranche financings, and insolvency-driven restructurings, where he has advised on numerous high-profile mandates.
A specialist lawyer for Commercial and Corporate Law (Fachanwalt für Handels- und Gesellschaftsrecht) and a founding member of the German Bar Association’s working group on commercial and corporate law, Matthias combines deep technical knowledge with strategic insight. He is regularly invited to speak on topics such as sustainable finance and restructuring trends and has contributed thought leadership to leading industry publications, including Thomson Reuters Practical Law.

Matthias joined the firm in August 2010. From 1999 to 2010, he worked with international and national law firms in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, London and New York. From 1998 to 1999 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Commercial and Company Law at the University of Bonn. He was admitted to the Bar in 1999 and qualified as a Specialist Lawyer (Fachanwalt) for Commercial and Corporate Law in 2006.
Matthias is a founding member of the working group committee on commercial and corporate law of the German Bar Association (Deutscher Anwaltsverein).
